An excerpt from "Round Pen First Steps":
Next, you'll simply combine the last two maneuvers: Walk towards the hip, driving it away, asking the rear leg closest to you to step in front of the other. Back up a step, asking the horse to creep a step toward you, then walk forward toward the head, asking the front legs and shoulders to move away. The moment the front leg crosses correctly, turn and walk away, using the turn of your shoulders to ask the horse to follow you forward. Your goal is a smooth dance move where the horse moves toward you then away before moving forward again. There should be no abrupt stops or starts; the movement has to flow smoothly. If it sounds tough, it's not, just do this: Ask the hip to move away, then the shoulder, then turn and walk away, expecting the horse to follow.
When you were doing your inside turns, did you notice how your horse began to cut corners, running in through the center, each time closer to you? As long as your horse isn't being aggressive, that's actually a good thing – and we'll use it now to our advantage as we teach the horse to come when called. (rpt)
